This week, Gov. Asa Hutchinson and the Arkansas Department of Health announced Arkansas will begin moving into phase 1B of the statewide COVID-19 vaccine plan on Monday, Jan. 18. Initial groups include people 70 or older, teachers and school staff members, and child care and higher education workers. As of Thursday, Jan. 14, 116,772 of the 324,400 doses received or allocated had been administered since vaccinations in the state began on Dec. 14.

The state set another grim record with 1,371 people hospitalized and 268 on ventilators with COVID-19 on Monday, Jan. 11. On Wednesday, Jan. 13, the state added 65 to the death total, one shy of the most deaths reported in a single day in Arkansas, which was recorded on Dec. 29. Since March, there have been 264,511 cases and 4,228 deaths among confirmed and probable cases.

According to the Arkansas Department of Health’s Educational Institutions Report released Thursday, there are 3,425 active cases among staff members, students, and teachers in the state’s public school districts. Total positive cases increased by 1,131 since the Monday report to 32,028, of which 21,539 are student cases.

At colleges and universities, there are 731 active cases. The three institutions with the most active cases are:

  • University of Arkansas in Fayetteville with 163 cases
  • University of Central Arkansas in Conway with 68 cases
  • Arkansas Tech University in Russellville with 47 cases

Total positive cases increased by 398 since the Monday report to 11,676 cases. Of these, 8,687 are student cases.
