In recent interviews with the news media, ACHI President and CEO Dr. Joe Thompson discussed the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines and the importance of masks in schools as the new school year begins.

Thompson told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that vaccination is by far the best way to protect people from serious illness and death, even though some vaccinated people have contracted COVID-19.

“As the spread of the delta variant has dramatically increased, the number of breakthrough cases has also increased; however, the individuals who are vaccinated have better outcomes than unprotected individuals,” he said.

In interviews with the Associated Press, 40/29, and KUAF, Thompson discussed the importance of masks in all Arkansas schools.

In districts that have adopted mask requirements, “I think those actions are going to prevent some superspreader events that would have occurred,” he told the AP.
