COVID-19 in Arkansas: A Weekly Snapshot, Nov. 21”’29, 2020

Since Nov. 16, new daily cases of COVID-19 in Arkansas have exceeded 1,000 each day, and on four of those days the counts exceeded 2,000 new cases. As of Nov. 29, there had been 156,247 total cases and 2,470 deaths reported among confirmed and probable cases. Current hospitalizations reached an all-time high of 1,030.

According to the Arkansas Department of Health’s Educational Institutions Report released on Wednesday, Nov. 25, there were 2,177 active cases among staff members, students, and teachers in the state’s public school districts last week. Total positive cases increased by 664 since the Monday, Nov. 23, report to 14,984, of which 10,299 were student cases.

At colleges and universities, there were 633 active cases. The three institutions with the most active cases were:

  • University of Arkansas in Fayetteville with 141 cases
  • Harding University in Searcy with 59 cases
  • University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with 41 cases

Total positive cases increased by 201 since the Monday report to 8,219 cases. Of these, 6,348 were student cases.

By School District

There were 117 school districts with high new infection rates last week — 109 in the red zone and eight in the purple zone. School districts in the red zone have 50 to 99 new known infections per 10,000 community residents during a 14-day period, as of Nov. 16. School districts in the purple zone have 100 or more new known infections per 10,000 community residents, or at least 1% of residents, during the same period.
