COVID-19 in Arkansas: A Weekly Snapshot, Dec. 4”’Dec. 10, 2020

As of Thursday, Dec. 10, Arkansas has had 25 days of over 1,000 new cases, with 11 days in excess of 2,000 new cases. There have been 178,854 cases and 2,820 deaths among confirmed and probable cases. On Monday, Dec. 7, Arkansas reported a record number of 53 COVID-19 deaths, while Friday, Dec. 4 marked a record high for new cases reported in a single day with 2,827.

According to the Arkansas Department of Health’s Educational Institutions Report released on Thursday, Dec. 10, there are 2,789 active cases among staff members, students, and teachers in the state’s public school districts. Total positive cases increased by 1,316, since the previous report on Monday, to 19,654 — of which 13,323 are student cases.

At colleges and universities, there are 520 active cases. The three institutions with the most active cases are:

  • University of Arkansas in Fayetteville with 112 cases
  • Arkansas State University in Jonesboro with 31 cases
  • University of Central Arkansas in Conway with 29 cases

Total positive cases increased by 245 since the Monday report to 9,192 cases. Of these, 7,054 are student cases.

There are 113 school districts with high new infection rates — 98 in the red zone and 15 in the purple zone. School districts in the red zone have 50 to 99 new known infections per 10,000 community residents during a 14-day period, as of Dec. 7. School districts in the purple zone have 100 or more new known infections per 10,000 community residents, or at least 1% of residents, during the same period.
