The Healthy Birthing Journey Podcast: Depression Screening

In the sixth episode of the Healthy Birthing Journey Podcast, we discuss the role of depression screening and other mental health resources to support Arkansas moms through pregnancy and the postpartum period. Guests and topics include:

  • Sarah Crawford and Izzy Montgomery with the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement dive into the data and share their analyses of maternal mental health in Arkansas.
  • Dr. Erin Jefferson with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Women’s Mental Health Program in Northwest Arkansas discusses treatment options and other mental health resources for moms.
  • Dr. Tamara Glover with the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff shares her personal experience with postpartum depression and what she’s doing now to support other moms.

Maternal and infant mortality rates in Arkansas are among the highest in the nation, but a wide range of efforts are underway to change that. Here at ACHI, we pulled our analysts and researchers together to envision what a healthy birthing journey should look like and identify points along the way where Arkansas has opportunities to make lasting improvements for our moms, children, families, and communities. We identified nine phases from pre-pregnancy through delivery and into the postpartum period. In this episode, we explore the sixth phase – depression screening.
