Menstruation is a natural part of the reproductive cycle for girls and women, requiring the use of period products such as sanitary pads and tampons for effective management. These items are not only vital for good hygiene but also contribute to the overall health and well-being of menstruating individuals.
However, many girls and women face significant cost barriers in accessing these products, a problem known as “period poverty.” Many states have pursued policy changes to increase access to these products, such as exempting them from sales taxes and providing them in schools.
This explainer explores the health impacts of period product access and affordability challenges, state efforts to address these challenges, and other relevant policy considerations.
