Don’t Build a Market With Plans To Tear It Down

In a guest column for Talk Business & Politics, ACHI Health Policy Director Craig Wilson discusses how the “Build Back Better” legislation currently under consideration in Congress would seek to expand healthcare coverage in states that have rejected Medicaid expansion.

The legislation would provide premium tax credits for Medicaid expansion-eligible residents in holdout states to purchase health plans through the health insurance marketplace, Wilson writes. He notes that this is similar to the premium assistance approach that Arkansas adopted for its innovative version of Medicaid expansion, but with a big difference: The “Build Back Better” approach would only offer premium subsidies for three years.
