The Healthy Birthing Journey Podcast: Home Visits

In the seventh episode of the Healthy Birthing Journey Podcast, we learn how home visiting programs and local community health workers can help improve maternal and infant health outcomes in Arkansas. Guests and topics include:

  • Tyra Greenwood, who directs the Arkansas Home Visiting Network for Arkansas Children’s Hospital, discusses what home visits look like and who conducts them.
  • Dr. Kalena Jones of Baptist Health shares how the hospital system’s Maternal Life360 program is identifying and helping Arkansas moms who need support.
  • Dr. Pearl McElfish of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Institute for Community Health Innovation highlights the opportunity for innovative programs and community health workers to support moms in rural Arkansas communities.

Maternal and infant mortality rates in Arkansas are among the highest in the nation, but a wide range of efforts are underway to change that. Here at ACHI, we pulled our analysts and researchers together to envision what a healthy birthing journey should look like and identify points along the way where Arkansas has opportunities to make lasting improvements for our moms, children, families, and communities. We identified nine phases from pre-pregnancy through delivery and into the postpartum period. In this episode, we explore the seventh phase – home visits.
