Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), which includes both intrauterine devices and contraceptive implants, is one of the most effective types of birth control available. However, the uptake of LARC is uneven across populations. This review synthesizes national data sources, peer-reviewed literature, and state initiatives to examine LARC utilization trends, barriers to and facilitators of LARC use, and state-based strategies that have expanded access to these devices.
For additional information about how LARC works, evidence regarding its effectiveness, and health plan coverage and reimbursement, read our explainer, Long-Acting Reversible Contraception: An Overview.
