COVID-19 in Arkansas: A Weekly Snapshot, Dec. 29”’Dec. 31, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic continued to surge in Arkansas this week, setting a grim record on Tuesday, Dec. 29, with 66 new deaths reported in a 24-hour period. The state is ending the year with a record 1,195 people hospitalized with COVID-19 as of today (Dec. 31). Since March, there have been 225,138 cases and 3,676 deaths among confirmed and probable cases.

According to the Arkansas Department of Health’s Educational Institutions Report released on Thursday, Dec. 31, there are 2,087 active cases among staff members, students, and teachers in the state’s public school districts. Total positive cases increased by 940 since the Monday report to 25,962, of which 17,569 are student cases.

At colleges and universities, there are 433 active cases. The three institutions with the most active cases are:

  • University of Arkansas in Fayetteville with 84 cases
  • University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock with 53 cases
  • University of Central Arkansas in Conway with 39 cases

Total positive cases increased by 298 since the Monday report to 10,381 cases. Of these, 7,883 are student cases.

There are 171 school districts with high new infection rates — 143 in the red zone and 28 in the purple zone. School districts in the red zone have 50 to 99 new known infections per 10,000 community residents during a 14-day period, as of Dec. 21. School districts in the purple zone have 100 or more new known infections per 10,000 community residents, or at least 1% of residents, during the same period.
