COVID-19 in Arkansas: A Weekly Snapshot, Dec. 11”’Dec. 17, 2020

This week, the first Arkansas healthcare workers received COVID-19 vaccinations beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 15. On Thursday, Dec. 17, Arkansas for the first time exceeded 3,000 new cases (3,039 new cases). The day prior, Arkansas recorded its highest daily number of COVID-19 deaths with 58. As of Thursday, Arkansas has had 32 consecutive days of over 1,000 new cases, and on half of those days new cases exceeded 2,000. There have been 194,543 cases and 3,112 deaths among confirmed and probable cases.

According to the Arkansas Department of Health’s Educational Institutions Report released on Thursday, Dec. 17, there are 3,049 active cases among staff members, students, and teachers in the state’s public school districts. Total positive cases increased by 1,170 since the Monday report to 22,099, of which 15,036 are student cases.

At colleges and universities, there are 449 active cases. The three institutions with the most active cases are:

  • University of Arkansas in Fayetteville with 119 cases
  • Arkansas State University in Jonesboro with 29 cases
  • University of Central Arkansas in Conway with 24 cases

Total positive cases increased by 213 since the Monday report to 9,616 cases. Of these, 7,362 are student cases.

There are 150 school districts with high new infection rates — 127 in the red zone and 23 in the purple zone. School districts in the red zone have 50 to 99 new known infections per 10,000 community residents during a 14-day period, as of Dec. 14. School districts in the purple zone have 100 or more new known infections per 10,000 community residents, or at least 1% of residents, during the same period.
